Step 1 - Registration

You will be able to apply for properties through Blyth Valley Homefinder if you are a housing applicant and have registered on the housing register. For details on how to apply to join the housing register click Who Can Use the Service.

When you are accepted on to the housing register we will write to tell you:

  • Your housing application number and password.
  • The band your application has been placed in and your registration date. Click Prioritising Applications for more information.

You must tell us if there are any changes in your circumstances so that we can reassess your application and if necessary make changes.

Property Size

You will only be eligible for properties that are suitable for the size of your family. The following table tells you how we normally decide on the number of bedrooms that you are eligible for:

Sheltered Housing  Single person aged over 60 or couples one of whom is aged over 60
Bedsit  Single person
1 Bedroom ground floor flat

Single person or couples one of whom has a confirmed permanent and substantial disability requiring level access accommodation

Single person aged over 60 or couples one of whom is aged over 60.

In the case of couples where only one applicant is aged over 60 the tenancy will be granted as a sole tenancy to the applicant who is over 60.
1 Bedroom bungalow  Single person aged over 60 or couples one of whom is aged over 60. In the case of couples where only one applicant is aged over 60 the tenancy will be granted as a sole tenancy to the applicant who is over 60.
1 Bedroom flat above ground floor Single person or couples

2 Bedroom ground floor flats

 A couple or 2 adults one of whom has a confirmed permanent and substantial disability requiring level access accommodation

  Couple or lone parent with one child one of whom has a confirmed permanent and substantial disability requiring level access accommodation

Single person with a confirmed permanent and substantial disability with a need for a resident/overnight carer.

Single person aged over 60 or couples one of whom is aged over 60.

In the case of couples where only one applicant is aged over 60 the tenancy will be granted as a sole tenancy to the applicant who is over 60.

2 Bedroom bungalows

A couple or 2 adults one of whom is aged 60 or over. In the case of couples where only one applicant is aged over 60 the tenancy will be granted as a sole tenancy to the applicant who is over 60.

2 Bedroom flats above ground floor

Couples or 2 adults

Household with 1 child

Household with 2 children of the same gender

Household with 2 children of opposite sex under 10

A parent with overnight access to 1 or more children
2 Bedroom  houses  Couples or 2 adults

Household with 1 child

Household with 2 children of the same gender

Household with 2 children of opposite sex under 10

A parent with overnight access to 1 or more children

3 Bedroom  houses

A couple or single parent with 2 or more children

3 or more adults

A parent with overnight access to 2 or more children

3 Bedroom maisonettes

A couple or single parent with 2 or more children

3 or more adults

A parent with overnight access to 2 or more children
3 Bedroom bungalows

3 or more adults one of whom has a confirmed permanent and substantial disability requiring level access accommodation

A couple or single parent with 2 or more children and one of whom has a confirmed permanent and substantial disability requiring level access accommodation.
4 Bedroom  houses

A couple or single parent with 3 or more children

4 or more adults

5 Bedroom houses

 A couple or single parent with 4 or more children  5 or more adults

This list is neither exhaustive nor inclusive.

There are exceptions to these criteria as follows:

  • Where a Blyth Valley Council tenant is under occupying their home by at least one bedroom and they are prepared to take smaller accommodation. However in this case the tenant will only be eligible for properties under the Property Letting Criteria, or
  • An increase in size on disability, or medical grounds is recommended eg in response to the specific needs of a child or adult or any need for a live-in carer.
